Side to Side

the sparrows
threw a party
they moved the trees
from side to side
they took a picture of the cake
they passed out in a wading pool
they spun around
until they fell
to the bottom of the trees
where i held you in your bed
they looked at me and said,
“lookit
lookit
lookit
that man,
he’s crying”

the great grandchildren of the sparrows
were passed out in a wading pool
“wake up,” i said.
they kissed my forehead
and together we flew away
as you slept
in your little bed
as the trees moved
from side to side
